Chief Seavey passed away on September 4, 2018, from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a blood cancer presumed to have been a result of contact with toxic substances during his 42 years of service as a first responder.

Chief Seavey tirelessly fought to reduce the health risks faced by first responders and raise their awareness of their job-related health hazards, and was instrumental in researching and writing the International Association of Fire Chiefs Lavender Ribbon Report: Best Practices for Preventing Firefighter Cancer, published just prior to his death.

Chief Seavey was present every October at the memorial, when the names of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice are added to the wall. The NFFF have moved the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend from October to May in 2023 and Chief Seavey’s own name will now be added to the memorial.

For more information about the memorial, visit the NFFF website.
