The Maryland State Firemen’s Association regretfully announces the passing of John Joseph Shuhart of the Barton Hose Company #1 on Tuesday February 14, 2023. John served the MSFA on the Insurance Committee 1983-1986, Chaired the Statistical Committee 1986-1990, Assistant Treasurer 1990-2000 and Treasurer 2002-2003.
John received the Gladhill-Thompson Award in 1996 and was inducted into the MSFA Hall of Fame. John Joseph Shuhart, 83, of Barton passed away peacefully with his family by his side at UPMC on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.
Born on October 21, 1939 he was the son of the late Joseph and Ruth Whiteman Shuhart. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Ann Garner; brother-in-law Willian Foote; brother-in-law Hugh Daughtery; and nephew Kevin Foote.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years Georgiann (Langham) Shuhart; his sons, Dr. Dwayne (Regina) of Greensburg, PA and Brian (Deanna) of Greencastle, PA; daughter Nikki (Drew) of Littlestown, PA; and sister Mary of Warsaw, OH. He is also survived by grandchildren, Jorden (Linda), Ariel (Tim), and Tasha all of Chambersburg, PA, Laura (Chris) of Huntersville, NC, Emilie (Michael) of Latrobe, PA, Noah of Greensburg, PA and Ciera of Littlestown, PA; and his precious greatgrandchildren, Sidney, Parker, Archer and Aubrie.
He was a graduate of Valley High School and Frostburg State College and received an MBA from Frostburg State College. He retired from Mead-Westvaco in 2002 with 40 years of service.
He was active in the Boy Scouts and served as Scout Master for the Barton Boy Scout Troup in the 1960’s and later the Barton Cub Scout Troup.
John was an active member of the Barton Hose Co. which he joined in 1967. He held the office of Secretary beginning in 1969 and Secretary/Treasurer 1988-2000, and Treasurer from 1988-2022. John received the Fireman of the Year for 3 years and the President’s Award 3 years. He was active in the Allegany/Garrett Counties Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association since 1974 and active with the Insurance Committee since 1982, Treasurer since 1988. John was a member of the Hall of Flame.
John has been active in the Maryland State Firemen’s Association since 1975 serving as a delegate. He served on various committees: Insurance Committee-1983-1986, Statistical Committee Chairman from 1986-1990, Assistant Treasurer from 1990-2000 and Treasurer 2002-2002. He was honored with the Gladhill Thompson Award in 1996 and as a member of the MSFA Hall of Fame.
He is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lonaconing where he has served on various committees. John was a member of the George’s Creek Sr. Center and Retirement Club. He was also a member of AARP and helped with the Tax Program for the last 10 years.
John loved to travel and had been in all 50 states. He also loved working in the kitchen on Bingo night and dinners prepared by the Auxiliary. A favorite pastime was working on crossword puzzles and picture puzzles.
Friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton on Thursday, February 16th from 4 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Friday, February 17th at 11:00 a.m. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service time.
Interment will be at Mt. View Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Barton Fire Co. #1 or the First United Methodist Church in Lonaconing.
