In September 1967, the Grant-In-Aid was made available to outstanding high school graduates enrolling at the University of Maryland. Preference was given to students enrolling in the Fire Protection Curriculum of the College of Engineering, but such enrollment was not a requirement. The award remained at $500 yearly for four years.
In May 1986, the requirement was that a student must enroll in the Fire Protection of Fire Science Curriculum of the College of Engineering. The award is set at $500 yearly for four years.
In September 1989, Grant-In-Aid was available to an outstanding student enrolled in the Fire Protection of Fire Science Curriculum of the College of Engineering. The award was to commence with the student’s Junior Year at $1,000 per year and continue the Senior Year if academic standards justified.
In July 1991, Grant-In-Aid was available to an outstanding student enrolled in the Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science Management, or EMS Program of the College of Engineering. The award of $1,000 was to commence with the student’s Junior Year and continue the Senior Year if academic standards and the program’s eligibility requirements are met.
Application Guidelines
- Applicants may apply for scholarship assistance in the following areas:
- Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland
- Any University of Maryland curriculum leading to a Bachelor Degree in fire or health (EMS) related fields.
The Scholarship Committee has assigned the following priorities to control scholarship grants:
(1) Fire Service Administration at the University of Maryland (Junior standing, or higher, in a 4-year program.)
(2) Community College in Fire or Health (EMS) related programs.
- An application must be submitted by March 31 to be considered for scholarship assistance for the enduring year. Applications may be obtained from the Scholarship Chairperson or any Committee member. The applicant must enter as a full-time student in his/her respective college/university. Acceptance by the respective college/university will be a prerequisite for receipt of a scholarship or loan. The respective campus finance office will be asked to review each application for scholarship assistance. All applicants must be Maryland State High School Graduates or hold a G.E.D. Certificate.
- The applicant, for any course or approved curriculum, shall be required to forward, or have forwarded, a letter or recommendation from his/her fire or rescue company. This letter must be signed by a chief officer of the applicant’s member company.
- Current college level student will be required to maintain an acceptable Grade Point Average (GPA). To be eligible for scholarship support for the ensure academic year. Students entering community colleges, with plans to transfer to a 4-year college/university, as in the Fire Protection Engineering curriculum, must ensure that their course of study is transferable to the institution for which a degree is desired.
