Fire Prevention Week (October 915) 2022 Campaign
Join the NFPA® in celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW).
This year’s FPW campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape™”, works to educate
everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those
around them safe from home fires. Learn more about how your department can educate
your communities at
https://www.nfpa.org/Events/Events/FirePreventionWeek/About
If your department is planning an Open House this October, please be sure to advertise it
across social media and tag the MSFA so we can help promote the event!

positions now available through the MSFA SAFER grant. The job announcements are
attached to this report. Applications are open through October 15th.

MSFA Name Change: President Kurtz will be scheduling regional open forums
over the next few months at locations TBD to address the name change and allow
members to voice their opinions and concerns. County association leadership and
voting delegates that attend the convention in Ocean City are strongly urged to
attend. More information to follow.

The name change survey has been disseminated by Taskforce Chair Teresa Crisman and
will be available until October 15th. It asks several questions regarding the proposed name
changes and why the proposals failed. We ask that those who receive the survey to reply
in a timely manner as we continue discussions on how we move forward into 2023. The
Taskforce is working diligently to collect the survey data and the feedback generated by
the membership.

To be clear, and taking into account the sensitivity and importance of this initiative, it is
important to allow the taskforce to complete its work. President Kurtz asks that member

Departments and Associations be patient with the process and not create negativity
around what should be a positive endeavor.

As a reminder, President Kurtz has asked that NO NAME CHANGE PROPOSALS
BE SUBMITTED until after January 1, 2023.

MSFA Committee Notices:

The MSFA Safety Committee will be meeting Sunday, October 2nd at 11am at the Kent
Island VFD. PP Dave Lewis will be presenting the NFFFs Courage to be Safe, which
is a firefighter training module that provides an introduction to all sixteen Firefighter Life
Safety Initiatives and assists the user in taking the first steps toward addressing these
safety initiatives in their job and department. The module begins with a discussion of the
immediate and root causes of firefighter Line of Duty Deaths and the profound effects of
these deaths on loved ones, colleagues, and the community. The module then advocates
for cultural change as an important way to reduce LODD’s and injuries. To support this
change, the module introduces all 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives and helps the
learner understand how s/he might implement these initiatives in their
personal/professional lifestyle and at the departmental level.

The MSFA Cancer Committee has announced its 2023 Walk of Hope in Annapolis which
will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2023. They hope to have an excellent turn out again
next spring!

The MSFA Ways and Means Committee reminds all departments that the 2023
Convention $10,000 Raffle tickets have been distributed to all Executive Committee
members. Please be sure to contact them to get your tickets!
