New History Book Features Beginning of MSFA

Volunteer Trumpet contributor Chip Jewell has published a new book, History of the Fire Companies of Frederick County Maryland. The book gives and in-depth look at the early history of the fire and rescue companies of Frederick County. The book also features an entire chapter how the MSFA was organized. New articles and artifacts dating back to June of 1892 tell the early story of MSFA and the relationship of the organization to the 75th anniversary of the Independent Hose Co. of Frederick. Chapters specific to the involvement of the Frederick fire companies in Harper’s Ferry and the Civil War. The book provides a glance at the advent of the steam pumpers and transition to motorized fire apparatus. A chapter telling of the many engines that threw water “over the town clock” gives an overview how of one of the “Clustered Spires of Frederick” became a part of fire service history. All proceeds benefit the Frederick County Fire & Rescue Museum, which has several MSFA displays as well as the diorama formerly on display at the Volunteer Firefighters Room at College Park.
