The Maryland State Firemen’s Association regretfully announce the passing of Emmons Kenneth Hornerof the Mount Vernon Volunteer Fire Department. Please keep Emmons’ family and fire department in prayer.Mt. Vernon – Emmons Kenneth Horner 88, of Mt. Vernon, Maryland passed away peacefully on January 7, 2024, at Stansell House Coastal Hospice in Ocean Pines, MD. Born April 10, 1935, in Mt. Vernon. He was the son of the late Roland M. and Emma D. Horner of Mt. Vernon.
After graduating Washington High School in 1953, Emmons served in the United States Marine Corps. He retired from Delmarva Power & Light as an Engineer and Fieldman after 30 years of service.
Emmons is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Mary Virginia {Green) Horner; his four children Kathy King {Gary) Princess Anne, MD, Jeff Horner (Liz) Belle Haven, VA, Carol Payne (Dicky Reynolds) Eden, MD, Kelly Courtney (Keith) Princess Anne, MD.; eight grandchildren Elizabeth Chaffey, Nikki Chaffey, Kyle King (Dina), Shane King (Haley), Rantz Purcell (Donna), Ryan Horner (Jeana), Jacob Courtney and Olivia Courtney; and four great grandchildren Makayla, Kylan, Mason and Conner. He is also survived by a dear brother-in-law Clayton Green of Westover, nieces Kay Parkinson and Joan Coble. He also leaves behind his beloved kitty “Tiddler”.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Allen Horner of Mt. Vernon and Harold Horner of Easton, MD.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Mt. Vernon, American Legion 0. T. Beauchamp Post #94, Princess Anne and Tony Tank Redmens Tribe #149 in Fruitland, MD. He was a Charter member of the Mt. Vernon Volunteer Fire Department with 40 years of active service. He served as past President, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Fire Police Captain. In addition, he held several positions in Maryland State Fireman’s Association, Eastern Shore Fireman’s Association and Somerset County Volunteer Fireman’s Association.
He was an avid outdoorsman, where he took many area youths on their first hunting or fishing trips. He was especially passionate about waterfowl hunting. He also loved gardening and growing flowers. Emmons would frequently enter the county fairs with his fresh vegetables and flowers along with sharing them with neighborhood friends and family.
A funeral service will be held at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, MD at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2024 with visitation for friends and family from 1 – 2 pm. Interment will be at Asbury United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon.
